CHANDIGARH: Not everyone who has fever and mild cold should think he has acquired swine flu and rush for a test. Doctors say those who develop
symptomatic features of swine flu within 10 days of return from a foreign land or come in contact with a patient who has returned from abroad, fall in the high probability category.

Listing the symptoms, Pradeep Tayal, nodal officer for swine flu at GMSH-16, said: ?Along with cold, cough and fever, if a patient is suffering from diarrhoea, drowsiness and vomiting, such patients are more susceptible to swine flu. However, H1N1 influenza is only confirmed through a throat swab sample test.?

He explained if a patient comes with flu-like symptoms, it?s up to the doctor to decide whether testing is required. In case it is, the patient would be asked to give his sample and to get admitted in isolation ward, if his symptoms are severe. Otherwise, according to revised guidelines for testing, a patient could be allowed to go home, Tayal added.

According to the revised guidelines, positive swine flu cases have the option of home quarantine, if they want to get admitted at hospital isolation ward. At hospital, a patient is kept on a dose of Tamiflu twice a day for minimum five days, and kept in hospital for another two days, if the need arises.

The patient is asked to wear a mask at all times to minimize the spread and provided with additional treatment for other symptoms like fever and diarrhoea, among others. He is provided with normal food.

According to guidelines, a team of doctors monitor the patients condition at regular intervals five times a day.

In case of home quarantine, patient is provided with guidelines and safety measures to be followed by the entire household. Guidelines state that patient should be kept in a separate room and provided with separate toilet as well. He should not have interaction with any of the family members. Moreover, the household is to be provided with preventive treatment.

The three government hospitals have arrangement for around 50 beds in their isolation wards to quarantine H1N1-positive cases.
