Farms quarantined following positive EHV-1 case in NJ

Two farms in New Jersey have been quarantined following confirmation that a horse has contracted the neurological form of Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1).

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture said one of the properties was in Gladstone, the other in Pompton Plains.

In all, 11 horses across up to four states are understood to have had contact with the infected horse when it attended a show in New York. None of those horses have shown signs of illness at this time, authorities said.

The department said the infected horse was recovering and receiving treatment at a veterinary quarantine facility in Oldwick...

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture has quarantined a Warren County farm after a 22-year-old horse was diagnosed with the highly infectious equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the often deadly neurologic form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). The horse had not left the premises in years.

The Thoroughbred mare was euthanized March 31 after she exhibited a rapid progression of neurologic signs typical of EHM; she was subsequently tested positive for EHV-1. There are a number of other horses present at the facility, none of which have shown signs of the disease.

This is the third case of EHM in New Jersey this year...
