Family doctors and municipal planners

tmf

Resident
Good evening,

A joint invitation by one's (hopefully trusted!) family doctor and one's city emergency coordinator to learn about emergency preparedness might 1) allow more neighbourhood residents to consider emergency preparedness, and 2) set the foundation for fruitful dialogue with the city regarding more specific pandemic preparedness.

There seems to be openness to this in my city of 200,000+ and I am encouraged this week.

Are there any other family doctors out there who have engaged their municipal government's emergency coordinators in dialogue?

Regards,

TMF

Re: Family doctors and municipal planners

I'm talking to many doctors who say it's all hype and not a big deal.

What needs to be done to modify that persuasion?

Re: Family doctors and municipal planners

Yesterday I mentioned to my allergy & asthma physician that I'm concerned about the possibility of H5N1 becoming a H2H pandemic, and that I've begun to stockpile a little medicine. He said that he's not at all worried about it because, "There hasn't even been a single case in the United States, and frankly we have better things to worry about."

My pharmacist neighbor takes a similar stance and says, "They'll come up with a vaccine, I'm sure of that, and this flu thing isn't going to be a problem."

I don't refute them. I just smile and change the subject. There's nothing to be gained by getting into a discussion that they obviously don't want to hear or aren't ready to hear. The information is already out there in the public domain and has been offered up from time to time by the media. It doesn't seem important to some, or even most, people. I hope they're right. I truly do.

Meanwhile, my DH and I continue to do some preparing on our own, and we keep our ear to the ground to try to hear if the fearsome train is coming down the track.

Re: Family doctors and municipal planners

A prominent orthopedist was asked about engaging in preparation and responded that he would get Tamiflu and had nothing to worry about.

My family physician says that I am much more informed than he is and he is unconcerned.

My sister works for a dermatologist who responded to the 30 day prep list by saying that it was extreme.
