[h=3]Abstract[/h] As the characteristics and accuracy of rapid influenza detection tests (RIDTs) vary, the development of a high-performance RIDT has been eagerly anticipated. In this study, we evaluated the new RIDT "GOLD SIGN FLU[SUP]?[/SUP]" and the usual RIDT "Quick Navi-Flu[SUP]?[/SUP]" in terms of detecting the influenza viruses A and B antigens in Japanese adults with influenza-like symptoms from December 2013 to March 2014. Among the 123 patients in whom nasopharyngeal swab specimens were collected, 59 tested positive (influenza A, 38; influenza B, 21) by viral isolation as the gold standard method. For "GOLD SIGN FLU[SUP]?[/SUP]", the sensitivities were 73.7% and 81.0%, and the specificities were 97.6% and 98.0% for influenza A and B, respectively. For "Quick Navi-Flu[SUP]?[/SUP]", the sensitivities were 86.8% and 85.7%, and the specificities were 98.8% and 100% for influenza A and B, respectively. More than 90% of the resulting line appearance time was less than 3minutes for influenza A and less than 2minutes for influenza B on the test strip of both RIDTs. "GOLD SIGN FLU[SUP]?[/SUP]" was useful for diagnosing influenza A, and the result was readily available for influenza B particularly among adult patients. "Quick Navi-Flu[SUP]?[/SUP]" showed better sensitivities and specificities than "GOLD SIGN FLU[SUP]?[/SUP]".
