News: Measles outbreak kills 22 children in Hadiya Zone, Central Ethiopia region

Addis Abeba – A measles outbreak in the Hadiya Zone of the recently formed Central Ethiopia region has led to the deaths of 22 children within the last fourteen days.

Nega Desalegn, a laboratory practitioner at Shone Primary Hospital, disclosed to Addis Standard that the outbreak has attained significant prevalence within the zone, with Shone town bearing a particularly heavy burden. In Shone town alone, over 80 individuals have received diagnoses of measles, according to the medical practitioner.

“Owing to the substantial influx of patients and a deficiency in available beds, the hospital has resorted to providing treatment to individuals in temporary tents,” Nega stated.

Moreover, the medical practitioner revealed that over 200 individuals presently carry a diagnosis of measles across the East Badawacho, West Badawacho, and Siraro Badawacho districts within the Hadiya Zone.​..

Since August 12, 2023, 237 Woredas across all regions in Ethiopia have been affected by the measles outbreak. The outbreak is active in 79 Woredas across the country out of the 359 Woredas affected. As of 03 March 2024, a total of 53 880 cases with 440 deaths have been reported, a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 0.82%. 43 047 of the cumulative cases and 318 deaths were reported in 2024 only. 373 new Cases were reported within the last 15 days

As of 24 March 2024, a total of 61 579 cases with 503 deaths have been reported, a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 0.82%. 15 536 of the cumulative cases and 112 deaths were reported in 2024 only. 4 new Cases and zero deaths were reported in the last seven days of the reporting period.

News: Measles outbreak claims 15 lives in Amhara's Wagihimra Zone amid severe drought

Addis Abeba – At least 15 people have died in the Wagihimra Zone of Ethiopia’s Amhara region due to a measles outbreak exacerbated by ongoing drought conditions.

In an interview with Addis Standard, Assefa Negash, the head of Wagihimra’s health department, revealed that approximately 1,800 people have been affected by measles in the zone.

He described the public health crisis as “complex” and deeply intertwined with a catastrophic harvest failure.

“Following last year’s drought caused by the lack of rain, cholera, measles, malaria, scabies, and zoonotic diseases have surged in the zone,” Assefa stated.

He emphasized that while malaria is also spreading, measles has reached a “dangerous level.”..​.

Ethiopian health authorities have reported 29,391 suspected cases of measles, including 27,423 (93.3%) confirmed cases and 210 deaths, as of mid-October this year.

Nearly nine out of 10 cases (87%) were reported in six regions: Oromia (12,444), Southern Ethiopia (3,759), Amhara (3,672), Sidama (2,799), Central Ethiopia (1,733) and Benshangul Gumuz (1,203).

A total of 16,355 cases (55.6%) have occurred in children under five years of age, of whom 61.4% had not received any dose of the measles vaccine.

The ongoing measles outbreak in Ethiopia highlights significant gaps in vaccination coverage, especially among unvaccinated children under five years of age. Continued transmission in some areas and delays in vaccination campaigns due to security concerns underscore the critical need to strengthen surveillance and vaccination activities.

A total of 232,363 measles cases and 3,136 deaths have been reported in Africa this year across 30 African Union Member States, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo reporting the most cases and deaths, with 92,653 and 2,162, respectively.
