GOVERNMENT STATEMENT
Following the false information about an alleged case of hemorrhagic fever in the Continental Region, the Government informs, for the knowledge of the public that, last weekend, an American subject died, an employee of the company Bouygues Batiment, named Shawn HAGGERTY, male, 58 years old, who was transferred from Oyala to La Paz Medical Center of Bata, after having taken an overdose of quinine to self-medicate for the malaria from which he suffered.
This caused a drug intoxication, producing fever, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. This contributed making a presumptive diagnosis in Oyala of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, and then to arranging transportation to La Paz Medical Center of Bata. This diagnosis, based on symptoms similar to those occurring in cases of Ebola, caused much anxiety, panic and uncertainty in both health workers and the general population.
Finally, the patient was admitted and isolated in the La Paz Medical Center of Bata, where he was diagnosed with drug intoxication, coagulation disorders and hemorrhagic enteropathy. With the treatment administered by doctors the vomiting and bloody diarrhea stopped and his vital signs improved. However, due to other diseases he suffered (hypertension, diabetes and obesity), the patient died at 03:46 hours on the morning of Sunday, August 17.
As a routine protocol in such cases, blood and saliva were taken, which were sent to the laboratory Centre International de Recherches Medicales in Franceville, Gabon, the results of which were negative for the Ebola virus.
