Epidemiological and virological surveillance of influenza activity
in France: season 2010-2011
This article summarizes influenza activity in France for the 2010-2011 season
after the 2009-2010 H1N1 influenza pandemic.
Methods ? This report is based on influenza clinical activity in the community
reported by the primary care networks, on virological data produced by
reference laboratories, on emergency units visits and hospitalizations for
clinical influenza, on acute respiratory infections outbreaks reported in nursing
homes, on surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI)
admitted in intensive care units, and on mortality data available in mainland
France and the French overseas territories.
Results ? In mainland France, the 2010-2011 season was characterized by a
moderate influenza epidemic in the community milder than 2009-2010
pandemic. The influenza epidemic occurred from late December 2010 to mid
February 2011 and peaked during the week 05/2011 (early February).
Influenza viruses were detected during the whole surveillance period with a
large circulation of A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses, followed by a circulation of
B viruses. The number of reported outbreaks in nursing homes increased
compared to previous seasons. The number of hospitalizations decreased
compared to the 2009-2010 pandemic. Characteristics of SARI were similar to
those of severe cases during the 2009-2010 pandemic. No excess mortality
was reported during this period compared to what is usually observed during
influenza seasons. In the French overseas territories, outbreaks were moderate
and associated with a large circulation of A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses in the
Reunion Island and circulation of A(H3) viruses in the French Guiana,
Martinique and Guadeloupe.
