Encephalitis kills horses in Pune

MUMBAI: There could be a trouble brewing at the Pune stables of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). According to sources few horses have died recently due to a suspect case of Encephalitis. It spreads mostly through mosquito bite and causes swelling of the brain in horses and may lead to their death.

With the Pune racing season set to begin within a month-and-a-half, sources caution it may lead to an epidemic. RWITC, however, downplayed the gravity. "Three two-year-old horses have died so far. One in April and two in the last month," informed Dr. S K Kulkarni, the chief vet at RWITC.

Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) senior vet Dr S K Kulkarni has allayed fears of any equine influenza at Pune stables, following the recent death of three horses. The authorities at RWITC said precautionary measures are being taken and laboratory assessment of samples was on.

One of the three two-year-old horses died in April and two died in May, Kulkarni said.

?There is no outbreak of disease,? Kulkarni said ruling out encephalitis or equine flu. The horses suffered from a nervous disorder, he said.

?However, as a precaution, we are testing blood samples and making assessments,? said Additional Secretary, RWTIC N H S Mani. ?We are awaiting reports from the laboratory before labelling it as encephalitis or equine flu.?
