Eight new swine-flu-related deaths reported

Swine-flu-related deaths in San Diego County jumped by 22 percent as eight new deaths were reported, including a 42-year-old woman who was otherwise healthy, county health officials said Tuesday.
Some of the deaths occurred as far back as Nov. 5 and it took several weeks to confirm the presence of the H1N1 flu virus, officials said.
The latest report brings the total number of deaths in which the H1N1 virus was the cause or a contributing factor to 45, officials said. Thirty-eight were residents of the county and the remainder were visitors.
Besides the 42-year-old woman, the other people who died suffered from underlying medical conditions: a 44-year-old-man; a 35-year-old woman; a 41-year-old woman; a 47-year-old man; a 67-year-old man who was visiting; a 46-year-old man who was visiting; and a 48-year-old woman who was visiting.
Officials once again urge residents to stay home if they feel ill and to see a doctor if flulike symptoms worsen. Vaccine supplies remain limited throughout the county.
