Vets Hold Ministry of Health Responsible for Endemic Bird Flu

Veterinarians confirmed that one of the main reasons for the endemic bird flu disease in Egypt was the assigning of the Ministry of Health the task of combating the disease, instead of the Veterinary Medicine Authority, which has the right to face this virus. They accused Ministry of Health officials of banishing veterinary cadres from the Bird Flu Control Committee.
During their annual Iftar banquet, which was organized by their syndicate last Wednesday, they called for independence from the Ministry of Agriculture, stressing that they bore the responsibility of protecting Egyptian livestock and citizens for more than 175 years.
They added that republican decrees assigned veterinary responsibility to the General Veterinary Services Authority and that laboratory diagnosis lie within the responsibility of the Animal Health Research Institute in Dokki.
Vets accused the Ministry of Health of monopolizing foreign grants and barring veterinary services from benefiting from them in animal diseases control.
Veterinarians Syndicate board member Dr. Sami Taha called for the return of the appointment of veterinary college graduates to work in veterinary organs nationwide, indicating that the appointment has been halted for more than 12 years despite the severe deficit in the number of veterinarians and the urgent need for them to fight common diseases.
