Today, two new human H5N1 cases have been locally confirmed in Egypt (number 84 and 85).

While the rest of world is watching the spread of novel H1N1, H5N1 is starting early in its re-occurrence in Egypt. The graph below, of the month of infection, shows that March, April, and May, are the months of the highest numbers of H5N1 infections in Egypt in the past. As demostrated by this graph, until this month of August in 2009, August has not previously had any confirmed H5N1 infections. Today we have had two, which will eventually be confirmed by WHO.
Finally, as a sobering note, all of the confirmed H5N1 infections in Egypt since April 21 have been children 8 or younger. The announcement today of a 14 year old girl in Damietta is cause for concern.
