CAIRO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian scientists have developed a new vaccine against the fatal bird flu H5N1, Dr. Hani el-Nazir, Chairman of National Research Center said in a statement on Sunday.

"The new vaccine is 100 percent Egyptian. It is more effective than the exported one," said Hani el-Nazir.

The exported vaccines failed to prove their effectiveness as the flu continues to spread all over the world, he said.

Egyptian companies will produce the new vaccine, which is set to be sold to the public in a period between one year and one year and a half, said the chairman.

"It will cost less money than the exported vaccine," he added.

Egypt is the most affected country by the deadly bird flu outside Asia and listed number three in the world, after Indonesia and Vietnam, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

So far, Egypt has reported 26 deaths of the H5N1 bird flu virus and 68 infected, according to WHO figures.
