CASTRO VALLEY ? Getting sick is definitely for the birds, particularly if it's a potentially deadly strain of the avian flu.

So, Eden Medical Center is hosting a free Sept. 27 forum for people who want to beware and be prepared.

California in general ? and the Bay Area in particular ? may be especially susceptible to the avian flu.

The viral respiratory tract infection, now hitting hardest in Asia, could arrive via birds or people traveling from overseas. In addition to ties with Asia, California has a multi-billion-dollar poultry industry and millions of migrating birds.

San Leandro internist Jeffrey Silvers, an infectious-disease expert, will discuss the flu, how to prevent and treat it, and the latest medical research.

Differences between various types of flu, the potential for an epidemic and how to prepare in case of an outbreak will be discussed during the 7 p.m. meeting at Eden Medical Center, 20103 Lake Chabot Road.
Eden also offers a range of health and wellness classes, support groups and specialty services.

Call 889-5078 or visit http://www.edenmedicalcenter.org to register for the forum and for information on other programs.
