Washington .- The bacteria E. coli resistant to antibiotics are more common in villages near roads completely rural areas, according to a study released by the University of Michigan and the agency Efe. This finding suggests that roads play an important role in the spread and containment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, commonly called "superbugs". "Many studies of various infectious diseases have shown the impact of roads in the spread of disease. However, this is the first study to demonstrate that roads also influence spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, "said Joe Eisenberg, co-author and professor at the School of Public Health of the University. Researchers at the University of Michigan, his colleagues at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito and Trinity College in Connecticut looked at a region in the northwest of Ecuador for five years, to focus on the resistance of the E. coli to the antibiotics ampicillin and sulfamethoxazole.
