Kasaï: eight suspected cases of yellow fever reported near Tshikapa (Kasaï)

Friday, October 14, 2022 - 11:39

Eight people with symptoms close to yellow fever have been identified in Kamako and Kandjaji, two localities located on the border with Angola and 150 kilometers south of Tshikapa, capital of Kasai.

The head of the hygiene program at the border, who delivers the information, specifies that all these people come from Angola and that the samples were taken and sent to the INRB.

“These people do not live in the DRC. They are Congolese who come from Angola. They have a very high fever. a yellow coloration. With the naked eye, we can speak of yellow fever but we are awaiting confirmation from the INRB", indicates the head of the border hygiene program, Christian Mabedi.

The latter also regrets the delay taken by the INRB to follow up on the samples sent and fears that if these cases are proven, the time taken by the INRB exposes the population.

Maniema: 26 cases of yellow fever recorded in 10 months

Published on Wed, 16/11/2022 - 08:33 | Modified on Wed, 16/11/2022 - 08:33

The province of Maniema has notified, since last January, 26 cases of yellow fever including one death.

The doctor in charge of the EPI-Maniema branch, Dr. Omari Walumba delivered these statistics on Tuesday, November 15, in Kindu.

It was during the advocacy meeting for the organization of the preventive campaign against yellow fever in this province.

Dr. Omari Walumba explains that through this meeting, the EPI wanted to mobilize funds to fill the gap of more than 37,000 USD in order to better organize the said campaign.

On the occasion, he requested the involvement and commitment of the participants in the implementation of this yellow fever preventive campaign.

“To organize this campaign we need human and financial resources. Through the mobilization of resources made at the level of different partners, a gap emerged and this gap should be filled by the local mobilization of resources, this is how we also shared the gap that will have to be try to mobilize locally so that we can organize a quality campaign throughout the province of Maniema ,” said Dr. Omari Walumba.

The representatives of the health zone teams of Maniema took part, last August, in the workshop of defense and consolidation of micro-planning of the preventive campaign against yellow fever.

Bukavu: launch of the yellow fever vaccination campaign

Posted on Tue, 29/11/2022 - 12:21 | Modified on Tue, 29/11/2022 - 14:08

The provincial Minister of Health of South Kivu launched, Monday, November 28, the preventive vaccination campaign against yellow fever in Bukavu (South Kivu).

Three urban health zones of this agglomeration are initially concerned with the objective of vaccinating all people aged 9 months to 60 years in the 34 health zones of the province.

Dr. Joseph Matundanya, provincial coordinating doctor of the Expanded Vaccination Program (EPI) in South Kivu, revealed that among the 26 provinces of the DRC, some have notified cases of yellow fever that have been laboratory confirmed.

“There are even epidemics that have started in Kinshasa and in other provinces, which is why the government, through the Ministry of Health, organized this campaign for people from 9 months to 60 years old. Yellow fever is a disease that manifests as fevers accompanied by jaundice,” he said.

The provincial coordinator of the EPI stressed that the vaccine remains the best way to fight against yellow fever:

“The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes called Aedes. There is no proper treatment for yellow fever. This is why the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health have implemented the vaccine against this disease because when you are affected by yellow fever, the risk of mortality is high”.

This yellow fever vaccination campaign in Bukavu was launched in the presence of government partners such as WHO and UNICEF.

DRC: nearly 1,000 cases of yellow fever recorded in 2022

FEBRUARY 20, 2023 HEALTH

Kinshasa, February 20, 2023 (ACP).- The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recorded 1,022 (one thousand and twenty-two) cases of yellow fever in 2022, including 23 deaths, i.e. a case fatality rate of 2.25%. .

The Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate of the General Directorate for the Fight against Disease of the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention announced this in a report received by the ACP on Monday.

“Only four out of 26 provinces in the country have been affected. All provinces reported at least one suspected case in the same year,” the source noted.

The source informs that the challenges to be met were, among other things, the improvement of the technical platform of the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB) for the confirmation of cases of yellow fever and the establishment of a national protocol for taking suspected cases in provinces at risk of yellow fever.

Several difficulties encountered, in particular the delay in signing the contract with transporters, the late deployment of vaccines and other inputs. Yellow fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease caused by an infectious agent called "yellow fever virus", the source noted.
