Civil society groups in Kipese are following with deep concern the dramatic situation that has unfolded in the village of Kitaki, located on the Kipese-Mubana road in the Lubero territory. There, several residents reportedly suffered poisoning after consuming mushrooms on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
According to information confirmed by a reliable local source contacted by our newsroom, the death toll stands at four. Among the victims are three children aged 8 to 11 and a woman in her fifties. The first death was recorded on Tuesday, June 2nd.
While the other two victims succumbed to their injuries: one on Wednesday night and the other on Thursday afternoon, June 4, 2026. Among these victims were two boys who belonged to the same family. The same source indicates that five other people remain hospitalized at the Kipese Reference Health Center (CSR) for medical treatment.
Among them, two patients are reported to be in a worrying state of health requiring close monitoring by medical staff. Furthermore, a resident identified as Kambale Vitsenge was admitted to the same health facility after escaping an act of mob justice.
Suspected by some residents of being the source of the mushrooms that were consumed, he was targeted by an angry mob. His rescue was made possible thanks to the swift intervention of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP).
However, both of his straw houses were burned down. In the face of this tragedy, civil society, the driving force of Kipese, offers its sincere condolences to the bereaved families and expresses its solidarity with those hospitalized and their loved ones.
The organization calls on the population to remain calm, exercise restraint and respect the law, reminding them that any possible responsibility must be established by the competent authorities following appropriate investigations.
Finally, civil society encourages health services to continue providing care for the sick and calls on administrative, health and judicial authorities to conduct thorough investigations to establish the exact circumstances of this tragedy and to prevent similar cases from occurring again.
