EVENT DESCRIPTION

From week 1 to week 18 of 2023 (ending 7 May 2023),
99 176 suspected measles cases and 1 239 deaths were
reported from 459 health zones (HZs) in all 26 provinces
of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), resulting
in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 1.2%.

Most of the cases were reported from five provinces of
North Kivu (26 239 cases), South Kivu (22 275 cases),
Lomami (12 006 cases), Sankuru (10 119 cases) and
Tshopo (9 815 cases).

Since the beginning of 2023, of the 3 213 cases
investigated, 1 797 have tested positive for measles IgM,
including 73% of children under five years of age and
46 compatible cases. A total of 159 HZs in 26 provinces
reported outbreaks, including 35 HZs with active
outbreaks in the last four weeks and two HZs with active
outbreaks in week 18.

During the same period last year (weeks 1-18), 51 374
suspected measles cases and 746 deaths (CFR 1.5%)
were reported from 356 HZs in all provinces of the DRC.
Compared with 2022, the number of cases in 2023
increased by 93.0%, deaths by 66.0% and HZs affected
by 22.4%. A strong resurgence of measles cases with
significant spread to new HZs has been observed in
2023.

In week 18 of 2023 only, the number of weekly cases
exceeded the 7 000 mark for the second time in 2023,
with a total of 7 114 suspected cases and 97 deaths (CFR
1.4%) reported in 224 HZs in 25 provinces. Almost half
of the suspected cases, 46. 7% (3 322 cases in week 18
were recorded in the HZs of Lodja (504 cases), Ototo
(304 cases) and Omondjadi (188 cases) in Sankuru;
Goma (377 cases), Masisi (376 cases), Nyiragongo (306
cases), Mweso (186 cases) and Pinga (154 cases) in
North Kivu; Lubao (239 cases) in Lomami; Idjwi (222
cases) and Kaniola (159 cases) in South Kivu; Kapanga
(157 cases) in Lualaba; and Nia-Nia (150 cases) in Ituri
Province. In addition, 310 cases were IgM+ for rubella,
of which 5.2% were children older than 14 years.

PUBLIC HEALTH ACTIONS

The National Coordinating Committee, led by the
Epidemiological Surveillance Unit, coordinates
response activities.

Ongoing investigation of suspected measles cases,
with blood and throat swab samples collected in
affected HZs. Samples are sent to the National Institute
for Biomedical Research laboratory for analysis.

WHO is equipping outbreak affected areas with
treatment kits.

The rollout of the second dose of measles vaccine
continues. To date, 25 of the country’s 26 provinces
have introduced measles vaccine. Haut-Uele province
is expected to start in mid-June, following training of
health care providers.

The first of four phases of the 2023 measles followup
campaign was launched, targeting 20 789 882
children aged 6-59 months, as part of the strategy to
eliminate measles by 2030 and in line with the 2021-
2030 strategic plan, which calls for three-year followup campaigns.

SITUATION INTERPRETATION

The measles situation in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo has seen an increasing trend in 2023 in terms of
the number of reported cases and deaths, as well as the
geographical distribution.

To reverse this trend, efforts must continue to adhere to
the schedule of activities for the organization of follow-up
campaigns and to complete the introduction of the second
dose of measles vaccine into the routine immunization
schedule.

Ituri: more than 1,500 cases of measles recorded in 4 months in Mambasa

More than one thousand five hundred cases of measles have been notified in the space of four months in the health zone of Nia-Nia, about 300 kilometers from the town of Bunia, in the territory of Mambasa (Ituri).

But everyone does what they want because we don't even have treatment kits. The message is the plea so that we can send support to the treatment team,” says Dr. Joseph Pemanakuwe.

The population asks the health authorities and their partners to initiate door-to-door vaccination campaigns to reduce cases of infant mortality in the area.

“Since August until September, the strike has been going on in our province and we do not have all the data. “Moreover, nearly 43,640 cases of measles, including more than 250 deaths, have been recorded since January to date. None of our 34 health zones have been spared from this viral disease. Minova remains the most affected health zone with more than 40 deaths and several contaminations during the year. However, care for the sick and people showing symptoms of measles is ensured. A single dose of vaccine is not enough against measles, at least two are needed,” reassures Doctor Bahizire Claude, responsible for communications within the South Kivu provincial division.
