The mayor of Boma in Kongo-Central, Marie-Josée Niongo Nsuami, calls on any owner of a dog, cat, chimpanzee or other pet to have it compulsorily and urgently vaccinated from Wednesday March 2.

In a press release published the same Wednesday, the urban authority informed the population of its jurisdiction of the presence of the canine rabies epidemic in the city.

To protect themselves from this deadly disease, Marie-Josée Niongo Nsuami invites the inhabitants of Boma to observe the recommendations issued for this purpose by her services.

According to the town hall of Boma, the canine rabies epidemic is indeed present in its jurisdiction; since all the samples taken from a few dogs and sent to the national veterinary laboratory of the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB) in Kinshasa all tested positive.

"All dogs must be kept in a safe place, in a cage or in a cubicle from this day forward to avoid the circulation of stray or wandering animals, constituting a public danger", insisted Niongo Nsuami.

She recommended to her constituents not to kill a biting dog, in order to facilitate the collection of samples for testing.

To control the statistics of the epidemiological evolution, Marie-Josée Niongo asked the population to report any case of bites to the local authorities, and to direct the bitten person to a care structure.

“Any bite from a rabid dog resulting in the death of a person constitutes, for its owner, the civil liability in the act committed by his animal. This will lead to legal proceedings and heavy sentences for him, ” she continued.

In this period of canine rabies response, the town hall demands a frank collaboration between the health zones and the urban veterinary service.
