Ituri: Several small ruminants decimated for more than two weeks in Djugu (Civil Protection Coordinator)
June 22, 2025
Djugu, June 22, 2025 (ACP).- Several small ruminants have been decimated for more than two weeks by an as yet unidentified epidemic in five villages of the Bedu-Ezekere group in the Walendu Tatsi sector of Djugu territory of Ituri province, northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the ACP learned on Saturday from an administrative source.
" Following an alert in five villages Lone, Ngbala 1 and 2, Kabaya 1 and 2 of the Bedu-Ezekere Group in the Walendu Tatsi sector, for more than two weeks, an animal epidemic has been observed that has not yet been brought under control and is decimating goats ," declared the provincial coordinator of the civil protection service Robert Ndjalonga in his alert note.
He added: " The first victims included more than 40 people who had benefited from goats from a partner as part of a breeding project and who would have lost almost all of these goats ."
Robert Ndjalonga indicated that the second victims are some indigenous people whose goats are also attacked, expressing the view that a zoonosis has broken out in this region.
" There is a risk to human health because dead or critically ill goats are slaughtered and eaten ," he said.
For Mr. Robert Njdalonga, " this alert requires rapid intervention by the veterinary service for investigations and response and the victim owners should refrain from consuming meat that is probably contaminated ." ACP/CL

Bunia, June 22, 2025 - An epidemic is currently affecting goats in several villages in the Bedhu Ezekere group, located in the Walendu Tatsi sector, in Djugu territory, Ituri province. The Ituri Civil Protection Department is sounding the alarm about this still uncontrolled animal disease that is decimating goat herds.
According to Robert Njalonga, provincial civil protection coordinator, five villages are already affected: Lone, Ngbala 1, Ngbala 2, Kabaya 1 and Kabaya 2. He warns of a risk of human contamination, as some people are eating dead or seriously ill goats.
"There is a real danger to public health: goats in critical condition or already dead are often slaughtered and then eaten by the population ," he warned.
Among the affected animals are those donated by a partner as part of a breeding project, as well as herds belonging to local breeders. The losses are significant for the beneficiary families.
Faced with this worrying situation, civil protection is urgently calling for the intervention of veterinary services to carry out investigations, identify the nature of the disease and organize an appropriate response.
