DRC: Four deaths reported after acute diarrhea in the Idiofa territory

August 1, 2026

Kinshasa, August 1, 2026 (ACP) - Four deaths due to acute diarrhea have been announced in the agglomeration of Pio Pio, located in the territory of Idiofa, Kwilu province, in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a health source reported on Friday.

" The Mokala health zone, specifically in the town of Pio Pio, has just recorded four deaths, which occurred as a result of acute diarrhea ," said Jacques Ngaidambu, medical director of the Pio Pio general hospital.

" The first cases reportedly appeared after a group of fishermen returned from a fishing trip. The first patient was admitted to hospital before the disease began to spread within the community ," he added.

The medical director indicated that to date, about twenty people have been treated for this acute diarrhea, while several patients continue their treatment within the health facility at the hospital.

J. Ngaidambu also stated that the observed clinical signs strongly suggest cholera. However, the diagnosis is not yet confirmed, as samples intended for the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) have not yet been collected for laboratory analysis.

The doctor, however, lamented the difficulties the hospital is facing in caring for patients, explaining that its response capacity remains limited due to a lack of essential medications, rehydration products, and medical equipment. Available stocks had reportedly already been depleted when the first cases were treated.

He also indicated that the Mokala health zone had announced the deployment of a response team, but that it had not yet arrived at the time of his intervention. He hopes that this mission will bring the necessary resources to strengthen the health response.

Faced with the risk of the situation worsening, the doctor appealed to provincial and national authorities and partners for urgent assistance in the form of medicines, rehydration products and medical equipment.

Ngaindambu also warned against the potential spread of this acute diarrhea to other areas, noting that Pio Pio is a riverside community where the population has limited awareness of preventative measures. He believes that swift action is essential to contain the disease, pending the results of laboratory tests that will confirm or rule out cholera.
