DON?T GO NEAR THE WATER TO FEED---THE WATERFOWL
A thank you must be given to Councilman Dan Ward. Dan wrote to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Fish, Wildlife 7Marine Resources concerning avian influenza (Bird Flu).
Mr.Ward brought out a variety of wetland and stream habitats Iin Amherst are very suitable for waterfowl. Waterfowl have been shown to be particularly vulnerable to the HS1 strain of AVIAN INFLUENZA.
Our agency strongly advises the PUBLIC not to feed waterfowl. We believe artificial concentrations of waterfowl caused by excess of food could be a contributing factor in exacerbating an outbreak of avian influenza. Other diseases, such as duck virus enteritis, may be spread more rapidly when waterfowl are fed.
Some municipalities have adopted local laws to do so. It may become a State regulation
