Malaria doubles its incidence this year in the Dominican Republic

Malaria or malaria is transmitted between humans through female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles, whose 465 formally recognized species inhabit practically the entire world.
Santo Domingo.- Two life-threatening diseases such as Covid-19 and malaria multiplied their incidence this year, although the first broke all epidemiological schemes in its lethality with the death of 1,309 people until yesterday in the Dominican Republic.
Malaria has doubled its impact so far in 2020, sickening 657 people, which represents an increase of 116% compared to the same period in 2019 when 301 were reported.
Malaria or malaria is a tropical infection that is acquired through the bite of mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles and causes an acute febrile syndrome lasting several days and, depending on the different species that originate it, complications may appear.
In each month of 2020, between 40 and 50 cases have been detected in the country, all autochthonous, whose origin derives from the Los Tres Brazos outbreak in 48% of the cases.
Another 25% are distributed in 15 neighborhoods of the country, reporting one to three infected in each one. The average age of those affected is 23.5 years.
So far, the disease has not caused deaths in the country, although two occurred last year, according to bulletin number 27 of the National Epidemiology Directorate of the Ministry of Public Health.
Each year there may be between 300 and 500 million cases of malaria in the exposed population. Among them, an estimated 1.5 to 3 million people die from this infection. 90% of fatal cases occur on the African continent.
Dengue and Leptospirosis
As for dengue, in the country it affected 3,369, however its incidence is lower than last year, when at the same date there were 4,502 cases. Neither have deaths from this disease been recorded.
The same is shown in the statistics of leptospirosis, a fatal disease acquired by making contact with the biological waste of animals, whose impact has affected 123 people this year and caused 19 deaths.
In the same period last year, this condition caused the death of 28 patients and affected 182 people.
