MANILA, Philippines - Hospitals that turn away suspected A(H1N1) cases face the loss of their licenses and PhilHealth health insurance payments, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III warned Thursday.
Duque issued the warning after receiving reports that some hospitals refused to take in for observations people who show symptoms of Influenza A(H1N1).
"Binigyan ko na ng warning. Sabi ko sa mga ospital kakasuhan kayo, tatanggalan ng lisensya at puputulan ang PhilHealth payments ninyo [I already warned them. I told them they will be charged, and they will lose their licenses and have their PhilHealth payments cut off]," he said in an interview on dzXL radio.
Duque, however, did not identify the hospitals reportedly refusing to admit persons showing symptoms of A(H1N1).
He then reiterated that the government is already trying to shift its strategy in dealing with A(H1N1) to treat it as an "ordinary" disease, so as not to cause panic.
On Wednesday, Duque said the DOH is limiting its updates on A(H1N1) to twice a week instead of daily.
Also on Wednesday, the DOH confirmed 23 more cases of A(H1N1) infection in the country, bringing the total number of infected people to 77.
Despite the increase, the DOH maintained that there is no cause for panic since there is no community spread of the virus yet.
Duque said 23 of the 77 cases have been discharged.
"This effort is part of the readiness of the Department of Health (DOH) to shift from containment to mitigation," he said on Wednesday.
Duque said 19 of the 23 new cases were Filipinos while the rest were foreigners. Seven of the new cases had recently traveled to the United States and Japan, he said.
The new cases are related to the cluster of schools that have voluntarily suspended their classes due to the virus, Duque said. These schools are De La Salle University, East Asia College, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, St. Andrew's School Para?aque, and Ateneo de Manila High School. - GMANews.TV
