Belgrade. Authorities in Serbia suspect the first case of the deadly H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus in domestic birds and have taken all the necessary measures to avoid the spreading of the disease, Reuters announced

BAKU (Reuters) - A dog has died of bird flu in Azerbaijan, a country where the virus is believed to have caused the death of three young women, officials said on Wednesday.

"A dead stray dog has been found, and after analysis type A bird flu was discovered. The medical investigation is continuing," said a statement from the state commission tasked with fighting the spread of bird flu. It said the dog died on March 9 in the capital Baku.

Accoording to the official release from the commission responsible for fight against BF, the tests on the stray dog indicicated that it had type A (h5n1) bird flu virus. The dog had died in the capital of Baku on March 9th.

More info in previous releseases from WHO - didnt translate that part- zk.

If I remember correctly, none of the humans who became ill were from Baku. Baku is on the Caspian Sea. They were from surrounding Provinces that have rivers. They were taken to the hospital in Baku. Zkurmis, correct me if I'm wrong. You have a better mental map of all this than I do.

How widespread is the infection in birds, mammals, and specifically humans in that area? I know that besides the Caspian Sea (Baku is on the Caspian), there are rivers that originate up near Tbilisi (Georgia, aren't there birdkill there) and run through Azerbaijan in areas where people are now ill and dying. There are also rivers (Aras and Kura) from eastern Turkey where the H5N1 with S227N polymorph killed family members several months ago, and these are close to rivers in Azjerbaijan (as the bird flies) or do they converge?

Sure would be great to have a map that we could fiddle with. Might need a tutorial to teach us to fiddle, too.

A stray dog has died of bird flu in the Caspian nation of Azerbaijan, health officials have said - thought to be the first time the virus has killed a dog.

Azerbaijan reported its first three human deaths from bird flu on Monday.
The World Health Organization has yet to confirm bird flu caused the human deaths, but said the US Navy lab that carried out the tests was reliable.
The deaths of the three young Azeri women would take the WHO total for human deaths from bird flu to 101.

There have been no confirmed cases of one person passing the virus to another. Most people who have contracted it are thought to have been in close contact with domestic poultry.


But scientists fear the virus could mutate into a form that can pass from person to person.


Germany has reported at least three cat deaths from bird flu, which has been spreading from South-East Asia since 2003.


Quarantine


The deadly H5N1 strain of the virus was discovered in migratory bird flocks in Azerbaijan last month.


The government has taken measures to quarantine the two regions where the women died, with entry and exit to their villages being controlled.
Cars were being disinfected and domestic poultry was being confined, Reuters news agency reported.
