Barry Animal Control Under Quarantine Again

BARRY (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Barry County Animal Control is back under quarantine due to the canine flu. The illness spread quickly through the kennels again.

Out of the five dogs that they have been quarantined two dogs are now showing signs again. Now the Animal Control is bringing in Pfizer to see if they can neutralize the area. The Animal Shelter is currently swamped and is housing 20 dogs which could be euthanized. The quarantine will last until April 30th.

Veterinarians tell Newschannel 3 that canine influenza is similar to the flu that people get. It becomes serious if the flu develops into pneumonia.

The main thing to watch out for is if your dog starts to cough, especially if it's a moist quiet cough. Canine influenza is not very common and it's very similar to the human flu. It can not be spread to humans or other animals besides dogs. It becomes serious if the flu develops into pneumonia.

Dogs quarantined at Barry County Animal Shelter

HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) - Dogs are under quarantine at the Barry County Animal Shelter due to an outbreak of what's described as "canine flu."

Sheriff Dar Leaf told 24 Hour News 8 the strain of "flu" is brand new to Michigan and could affect dogs across the state.

Recently, the shelter had to euthanize 10 more dogs following an outbreak a few weeks ago that forced 13 dogs to be euthanized. Five dogs are being tested at Pfizer to determine if there is a potential vaccination for the "flu."

The sheriff said the dogs will remain quarantined until either April 30 or May 5.
