Foot-and-mouth disease reoccurs in north province of Vietnam

HANOI, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The foot-and-mouth disease in livestock reoccurred in the northern province of Dien Bien, Vietnam News Agency reported on Thursday.

There have been 232 cows and buffaloes infected with the foot- and-mouth virus in the past six days in five communes of the province, the agency reported.

According to Cao Thi Tuyet Lan, head of the Dien Bien provincial Department of Animal Health, foot-and-mouth disease has become more complicated as it has spread rapidly in the province.

Most affected areas are located in mountainous and remote districts where local people often have free-range livestock, Lan said.

The local authorities are taking some measures to prevent the disease spread including banning the transport, slaughtering and trading livestock in affected areas.

Moreover, they have established checkpoints to quickly detect new outbreaks of the disease, the agency reported.
