Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, June 30 2009: Even as Taothong area in Imphal West District has been grappling with outbreak of Malaria over the past few days, fresh report of many people suffering from Dengue like symptom in border town of Moreh has come in.

According to sources from State Health Services, many people have been admitted to Moreh Hospital with symptoms of Dengue like fever.

Though the cases have not yet been confirmed as Dengue, it has also come to light that there is no facility either at the Hospitals under the State Government or at RIMS for laboratory testing in this regard, sources said, adding that a team of doctors from the State Health Services would be going to Moreh in the second week of July to find out the origin of the disease.

It is said for Manipur testing of Dengue, Malaria, Japanese Encephalitis and other such vector borne diseases are conducted at Vector Control and Research Centre, Puducherry.

It may be recalled here that the first cases of Dengue in Manipur had been detected at the border town of Moreh in 2007 .

Meanwhile, Taothong area in Imphal West has been grappling with outbreak of Malaria with 18 cases confirmed from testing of around 400 suspected cases over the last few days.

Continuing the control effort, an official team of State Vector Borne Control Society has also collected some more blood samples from the affected area today.

However, fogging which was to be conducted today has been deferred due to inclement weather and it would be carried out tomorrow, according to information received by the press.

Dengue virus strand found exotic
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, July 07 2009: The virus strand which caused dengue that broke out and killed many people at border town Moreh in 2007 has been found to be an exotic breed.

It is believed that the virus strand might be common to those found in some South East Asian countries.

In the aftermath of the outbreak of dengue at Moreh in 2009, blood samples of the patients were sent to the Pondicherry based Vector Control Research Centre and it was confirmed that the disease stalking Moreh township was Dengue Type-II.

Further analysis of the samples revealed that virus strand causing the disease was different from the three virus strands identified in the country.

It is suspected that the virus strand detected at Moreh might be among those virus strands identified earlier in some South East Asian countries.

Meanwhile, acting on the reports that 197 patients with symptoms similar to those of dengue were examined at the OPD of Moreh Hospital last month, a team led by Health Services Director (Public Health) Dr Bhubonchandra has left for Moreh today.

The team would work to identify and collect the mosquitoes communicating the disease.

However, the State does not any facility to conduct test for dengue nor is there any laboratory for serum separation, conveyed a source.

Team to test dengue outbreak in Moreh
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Imphal, July 7: The state medical directorate today rushed a team to Moreh in Chandel district following reports of outbreak of fever with dengue-like symptoms.

The border town of Manipur has a record of outbreak of dengue. The outbreak was confirmed by Imphal?s Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in November 2007 after blood samples collected from an eight-year-old girl, M. Vidya, tested positive for dengue at the Mumbai-based SRL Ranbaxy Lab.

Vidya was saved but her elder sister, Puni, 10, who was also brought to the hospital, died of suspected dengue.

The state health department announced total control of dengue outbreak in Moreh within eight days of confirmation of the outbreak.

The medical team headed by Th. Bhubanchandra, additional director (public health), left Imphal for Moreh this morning to investigate a possible outbreak of dengue.

Medical personnel posted at the border town reported that by June 19 a large number of people with fever and nearly 200 patients with dengue-like symptoms, were admitted to the government hospital in the town.

?We could not say whether dengue has returned in Moreh. We will carry out investigations and confirm only after testing blood samples,? Bhubanchandra said before leaving for Moreh.

The medical team, which will stay in Moreh for a few days, will collect blood samples of patients and try to conduct tests to find out if any of the mosquito species carrying dengue virus are present in the town.

After the team collects the samples, the state health department will send them to the Vector Control Research Centre, Pondicherry, for confirmation of dengue and other diseases.

An expert team on malaria is already carrying out investigations in Moreh. Reports said some patients have tested positive.

Moreh, the border town between India and Myanmar, has a large number of floating population, mostly on business trips. Health experts suspect that the source of dengue that broke out in 2007 was the South Asian countries.

Dengue outbreak fear grips Moreh
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, November 06 2009: Even as the State Health officials are apprehensive about the possible spread of Dengue in Imphal area after its outbreak was reported for the first time in the State from the border town Moreh last year, 22 new samples have been collected from Moreh and sent for testing.

A source from the State Health Department said that after the outbreak of Dengue in the border town where even human fatalities had occured, there have been frequent reports of patients with symptoms similar to the infectious disease admitted to the hospital.

So the State Health Department has been closely monitoring the situation.

There is also the possible spread of the infectious disease in Imphal areas in view of the fact that traders from Imphal have been commuting to the border town for business transaction every day.

However, there has been any Dengue cases reported anywhere from Imphal area, the source said.

The source further conveyed that in order to find out the truth behind admission of patients with Dengue like symptoms in the border town, the State Health Department has collected and send 22 new samples for testing at Vector Control Research Centre, Puducherry.

The test result of these samples are still being awaited, the source added.

It may be noted here that the outbreak of Dengue in Moreh that led to human fatality had been confirmed sometime earlier as a type which is new to India but common in other South East Asian countries.

According to Medical Superintendent of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Prof Y Mohen, the Microbiology Department of the medical institute has now facility for conducting test of this disease.

Earlier, RIMS used to facilitate in sending the samples for testing at the Ranbaxy company, Mumbai.
