Dengue outbreak declared in the Turks and Caicos Islands

An extensive fogging schedule will be implemented across each island in the Turks and Caicos in response to the rising cases of dengue fever.

The Ministry of Health and Human Services says the TCI received confirmation of its first dengue case on October 17, 2023. Since this time, through raised awareness with the public and health care providers, testing has increased with 13 confirmed cases of dengue being identified to date with a further 74 suspected cases.

The Ministry says these recent increases signal the start of a dengue outbreak in the TCI. The confirmed cases are distributed across the islands as follows:

Providenciales: 12 confirmed
Grand Turk: 1 confirmed

It notes there are four dengue virus types. Two types of dengue virus have since been identified in the TCI- type two and type three (DENV-2 and DENV-3).​..​

Minister of Health, Hon Shaun Malcolm revealed in the House of Assembly last Thursday that the Dengue virus outbreak is rapidly moving through the Islands, warning everyone to be extra cautious.

Delivering his two-minute speech in the Assembly on November 23, Minister Malcolm said there are 13 confirmed cases, 12 in Providenciales and one in Grand Turk.

But while those numbers are not alarming, the minister went on to reveal that the ministry is monitoring 88 suspected cases, 38 of which are within the last week, and all based in Providenciales.

"All of the 38 recent suspected cases are all concentrated in Providenciales… two on the airport road, one around Beaches, 12 in Blue Hills, six in Five Cays, one in the Glass Shack area, four in Kew Town area, one on Millenium highway upper side, one on Millenium highway lower side, two in South Dock, two in the Bight area, one on Venetian road, and five that we cannot easily identify the area,” the minister reported.

He said generally of the 88 suspected cases his ministry can account for 23 in Blue Hills, one in Dock Yard, 18 in Five Cays, two in Glass Shack, eight in Kew Town, one on Leeward Highway, one in Leeward Palms, two on Millennium highway, four in South Dock, one on South Dock Road, two in Wheeland, 12 they cannot identify, six unknown, two on airport road, two in the Bight, one on Venetian Road...
