Dengue Gaon? 554 cases in Gurgaon
17 Sep 2008, 0142 hrs IST, Sumi Sukanya,TNN

GURGAON: The spread of dengue continues unabated in the 'Millennium City'. With 554 cases and three deaths reported so far this season, more and more questions are being asked about the pathetic infrastructure beneath the outward glitz.

In comparison, there have been 274 dengue cases and one death in all of Delhi.

On Tuesday, Gurgaon's chief medical officer, Dr S S Dalal, confirmed that the upscale Sector 47 was among the worst hit areas in Gurgaon.

"We have been asking HUDA and other civic agencies for speedy construction and proper maintenance of the drainage system. They have not paid heed," he said.

The road near Malibu Towne and Mehfil Garden in Sector 47, where sewer water from houses flows onto the road, is a typical example of the conditions that are helping mosquitoes breed. Residents and businessmen have been complaining about the 1km-long stretch of stagnant water, but no steps have been taken.

B K Dutta, a senior resident, said, "The condition of the road is pathetic. I have been frequenting this place for the last 2-3 months and water has not dried up for a single day."

"We are compelled to live in life-threatening conditions with the fear of dengue hanging over our heads. When it rains, we have to wade through knee-deep water to go past the stretch," rued Ram Kishan who runs a taxi stand near Malibu Towne.

Said Deepti Umashankar, deputy commissioner, "We realize that anti-larvae operations and fogging will not help in checking dengue until proper cleanliness and sanitation is maintained. We will ask the agencies concerned to take up the issue on priority."
That it seems is not going to happen any time soon because HUDA has its excuse ready. G Anupama, HUDA administrator said, "The area is flanked by villages on both sides and water flowing on that stretch comes from the villages. We are trying to construct a sewer line and storm water drain in that area but it will take at least six months. Getting clearance from the forest department took time."
