Dengue fever on the rise


Dengue fever has spread out rapidly in several southern, central and central highland provinces. The number of infected people hospitalized has increased sharply.
In southern Kien Giang province, nearly 800 cases of dengue fever ? 3 of them fatal- have been reported with children comprising half of the total. In July alone, there were 155 diagnosed patients, 23 more than in June.

In central highland Kon Tum province, 322 people have contracted the disease in 36 communes and districts. July?s infection rate is three times what it was a year ago. The provincial preventive health centre said that the rainy season will boost populations of mosquitoes, which are the main carriers of the disease.

In central Quang Tri province, although no fatalities have been reported for the past few days, the number of infections has increased sharply. In July, 32 were confirmed, more than the total number of cases in the first half of the year.

Quang Tri province?s preventive health centre sent doctors to halt local outbreaks and co-ordinate with local authorities to eradicate mosquito larvae and conduct mosquito survey in areas reporting infections.

According to health experts, the increase in the number of dengue fever cases can be attributed to local negligence in carrying out preventive measures.

HCM CITY? With dengue fever sweeping across many provinces and cities, hospitals are hard pressed to cope with the rush of patients, with many even facing a shortage of beds and medical staff.
HCM City's Paediatric Hospital Number 1, for instance, receives nearly 100 children with the disease daily, 60 per cent of them from other provinces.

Each bed has to accommodate three or four patients, with others lying in corridors.

Dr Nguyen Minh Tuan, deputy head of the hospital's dengue fever ward, said that out of almost 100 children being treated, 20 were in serious condition after being admitted late.

At the Quang Nam Province General Hospital, hundreds of dengue patients have been treated since last week.

Nguyen Tan Dieu, head of the hospital's tropical diseases ward, said the number of patients had doubled since June to 144, adding other hospitals in the province faced a similar situation.

Huynh Cong Quang of the province's Preventive Medicine Centre said 241 people were hospitalised in the first six months compared to just 18 in the same period last year.

In June alone more than 100 cases were reported, he said.

In Tien Giang Province, the General Hospital on Tuesday admitted four children with dengue to the emergency ward. Sixteen others were in another ward.

Dr Truong Cong Day, head of the hospital's paediatric ward, said the number of cases had spurted in recent weeks because of the onset of the rainy season.

Ben Tre Province's Nguyen Dinh Chieu General Hospital had nearly 134 patients with dengue on Tuesday, 41 of them in serious condition.

Doctors said they had treated nearly 500 patients in July, or half the total number in the first seven months.

In the rovince's Ba Tri District, 114 patients and suspected patients were at the General Hospital on Tuesday.

Dr Le Thi Thu Nhi, its head, said with the number of patients increasing sharply, her hospital was overloaded and she had had to requisition doctors from several commune and town hospitals.

In Ha Noi, the Preventive Medicine Centre has reported nearly 500 dengue cases so far this year.

The Ministry of Health's Preventive Medicine Department said nearly 20,000 cases were reported in the first six months, including 20 victims who had died. ?VNS

Dengue fever spreads in Vietnam

The Department of Preventive Health reported on August 1 that dengue fever is spreading through out the country.

The capital city of Hanoi has over 500 dengue fever patients and that figure is rising. Medical workers fretted that the density of mosquitoes and unhygienic environmental conditions in many residential blocks would worsen circumstances.

Meanwhile, the disease plagues Mekong delta provinces. Ben Tre?s deputy head of Department of Health, Nguyen Van Thang, reported on August 1 that around 1,800 residents had suffered from the disease, including two fatalities in the province. The province?s General Hospital receives approximately 40 cases a day, while 143 persons have been hospitalized. District Ba Tri has handled most of the cases with over 700 patients.

In Dong Thap province in the heart of the Mekong Delta, three residents died from the pandemic and the rate of infected patients has increased by 36.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

Until now, around 1,005 people have contracted dengue fever in An Giang province to the west, with three of them dying; meanwhile, its neighboring province, Kien Giang, said the province hospitals are treating 800 people suffering from dengue fever, also suffering three casualties.
