Whooping cough cases reported at Hillcrest E.S

UPPER DARBY ? Parents of the 611 students enrolled at Hillcrest Elementary School have been notified of eight confirmed cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, in the Drexel Hill school.
?While the rest of the world is worrying about swine (flu), we are worrying about pertussis,? Upper Darby School District Assistant Superintendent Louis DeVlieger stated in a brief e-mail.
Pertussis, a kind of bacteria, is an infectious disease, occurring mainly in children and characterized by a violent cough.
The letter sent home from Principal Daniel J. Horan is for informational purposes to the parents and announced that the state Department of Health is offering a free booster shot to eligible students and their families Friday at the school. The shots will be given from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Household members may receive their immunization by coming to the school during the same hours. According to Horan, the Health Department requires advance notice of intent to be vaccinated with the booster shot, so there is sufficient supply.
Persons unable to attend Friday, but who wish to receive the Tdap vaccine, can call the Delaware County State Health Center at 610-447-3250.
Those eligible include those who have not already received a recommended one-time dose of Tdap, persons between 10 and 64 years old, women not pregnant, persons not allergic to any component of the vaccine, those who have not had a previous allergic reaction to vaccines containing tetanus, diphtheria or pertussis and those who have not had seizures or other neurological problems within two weeks of a previous vaccine.
The consent forms sent home with the students must be signed and returned to the school if needing a vaccine.
