NEED TO TAKE MEASURE TO CONTROL CHICKUNGUNYA
IN ANDHRA PRADESH
SHRI K. RAMA MOHANA RAO (ANDHRA PRADESH): Mr. Chairman, Sir, on the one hand the Government is moving heaven and earth to control Bird Flu:surrender: , but on the other, the State of Andhra Pradesh is reeling under mysterious virus which has spread its tentacles in six districts of Andhra Pradesh, including the capital. The State has faced dengue and encephalitis just a few months back and now it is the turn of Chickungunya. The blood samples of Chickungunya from State tested at the National Institute of Virology confirmed that the virus is Chickungunya. More than 1400 cases in just a few days have been reported in various villages of the above districts. This virus was first discovered in Kenya in 1952. Then, in 1965, it had affected three lakh people in Chennai. And, now, after four decades, it resurfaced again in Andhra Pradesh. The medical experts from the NIV say that this has come from Kyasanur forest in Karnataka. The symptoms of Chickungunya are high fever, excruciating pain in the joints and headache. The State Government is not able to control it because the symptoms are confused with dengue and the villagers are caught unaware to find out as to what kind of disease it is. The State Government has set up medical camps to treat the patients. But, since the number of cases is going up, it is proved to be a difficult task for the State Government. Hence, I request the Government of India to immediately send the Central medical teams and medicines to Andhra Pradesh to assist the State in controlling this deadly virus. (Ends)
