On Friday, the State Veterinary Administration (SVS) confirmed the occurrence of bird flu in two dead swans on the Lužnice River near the village of Dráchov in the Tábor region. It was a highly pathogenic type of virus that can also be dangerous to humans.
Veterinarians and local breeders informed veterinarians about the fact that the swans were a highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus. "We also drew the attention of municipalities that are close to the occurrence of the disease," said Petr Vorlíček, a spokesman for the State Veterinary Administration.
In addition, experts have warned that this subtype of bird flu is potentially dangerous to humans. This year it is the 29th case of infection in wild birds in the Czech Republic, but the first subtype of H5N1 in those in the wild.
The last time bird flu was confirmed in the Czech Republic was at the end of October, when veterinarians recorded an outbreak in poultry farming in the Jihlava region. Experts together with firefighters subsequently destroyed the entire farm, ie five thousand pieces of poultry. Also in this case it was a subtype of bird flu H5N1.
In the Czech Republic, veterinarians have already killed about a quarter of a million birds this year. "In the Czech Republic, 39 outbreaks of bird flu in poultry farms and one outbreak in captive birds were declared this year," Vorlíček concluded.
