Health alert in Cienfuegos: hundreds of fever cases every week

In the municipality of Palmira, 90% of the population is infected.

Saturday, October 18, 2025 - 8:02 PM

A total of 250 to 350 cases of febrile syndromes are diagnosed each week in the municipality of Palmira, in Cienfuegos.

The Pedro Kouri Institute of Tropical Medicine confirmed that chikungunya is circulating in the locality and that, at this moment, 90% of the total population is affected by this situation, acknowledged a report in the local official press.

These figures are known in a critical health and epidemiological context in the country , due to the simultaneous offensive of three viral diseases: dengue, chikungunya and Oropouche fever , as well as seasonal viruses , and the worrying increase in serious cases in several provinces.

This week, in the municipality of Cifuentes, in the province of Villa Clara, the news of the death of Adelaida Yanes was announced, who lost her life due to dengue hemorrhagic fever , according to sources close to the family.

A few days earlier, the death of a young man in Cárdenas , Matanzas, due to hemorrhagic dengue fever was also confirmed , which caused alarm and indignation among the population due to the silence of the Public Health authorities.

The western province has been facing a wave of dengue fever and other infectious diseases in recent weeks, overwhelming hospitals and heightening fears among residents.

Despite public alerts on social media about the rise in infections and the deaths of several people, mainly in this province, an institutional silence reigned for weeks, and then health authorities downplayed the epidemiological situation and denied that there had been any deaths due to arbovirosis in the country.

But the official silence was broken today - although only partially - when the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported the deaths of three people due to dengue fever since the beginning of 2025 , the government's first acknowledgement of deaths from arbovirus this year.

The revelation was made by the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Dr. Carilda Peña García , before the Cuban official press, but without providing data on the ages and sexes, provinces and clinical conditions of the deceased , which preserves the secrecy surrounding the management of the crisis.

According to the official, the three deaths due to dengue fever were confirmed by obituary studies and a prior clinical diagnosis.

Epidemiological alarm in Cuba: More than 13,000 sick with fever in just one week
Cuba is facing an epidemiological alert with over 13,000 cases of fever reported in a week. Dengue and chikungunya are on the rise. Authorities are implementing fumigation and larval control measures to contain the outbreak.
By CiberCuba Editorial Team

Cuba ended the previous week with a national spike in fever: the surveillance system recorded more than 13,000 non-specific fever cases in just seven days (13,071), an indicator of active circulation of arbovirus and with the endemic corridor for fever at an epidemic level.

According to reported, Deputy Minister of Health Carilda Peña García stated in the weekly television update that there is a rise in cases of fever across all territories, with the exception of Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Las Tunas, Holguín, and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

Dengue cases are on the rise. The national rate has increased to 24.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. The five provinces with the most complex situation are Guantánamo, Matanzas, Ciego de Ávila, Havana, and Cienfuegos; following them are Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, and Camagüey.

About Chikungunya, it was warned that it remains present in almost the entire country, except for Las Tunas, Mayabeque, and the Isle of Youth, where there is no strong evidence of transmission.

The increase in viral circulation resulted in more severe cases: 16 additional patients were treated in intensive care units compared to the previous week; during the week, 7 were in critical condition and it ended with one in that condition.

The health authority warned that the risk of severe disease increases in individuals who are reinfected with a different serotype; currently, dengue 4 is predominant, following several years of predominance of serotype 3...

What happened, where and when?

In October 2025, the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) officially declared a complex arboviral outbreak in Cuba, involving Dengue, Oropouche, and Chikungunya viruses. All 15 provinces are affected to varying degrees, with the most critical situation reported in Matanzas, where approximately 460 febrile syndromes are being registered daily—a number that continues to rise.

On 15 October 2025, the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) issued an official update confirming the simultaneous circulation of Dengue, Oropouche, and Chikungunya viruses across the country, and reported the first fatalities associated with Dengue.

On 6 October, during a high-level meeting held in Matanzas, chaired by the President of the Republic, MINSAP confirmed Matanzas as the epicenter of the national outbreak. The Minister of Public Health attributed the situation to a convergence of environmental, climatic, and structural factors—persistent rains, high temperatures, inadequate waste management, and water supply challenges—all of which have created optimal conditions for mosquito proliferation (salud.msp.gob.cu, 10 Oct 2025).

To strengthen the response, MINSAP deployed a medical contingent composed of physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, and technicians— led by the Minister of Public Health—to the Cárdenas and Colón municipalities, supported by brigades from Havana and other provinces. These teams are carrying out intensified fumigation, environmental sanitation, larval and adult mosquito control, and active epidemiological surveillance, while hospitals manage patients with warning signs and severe symptoms. Authorities have also emphasized community participation, urging households to eliminate breeding sites and sustain local focal control actions.

In the eastern provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo, a sharp rise in suspected and confirmed cases has been reported since late September 2025. Epidemiological forecasts anticipate continued increases in transmission in these provinces over the coming weeks.

The co-circulation of multiple arboviruses has significantly increased the public health burden. Hospitals in affected provinces are under strain due to rising admissions, prompting the decentralization of care to municipal facilities to manage patients without warning signs. Pregnant women, children, older adults, and people with disabilities are being prioritized for medical follow-up due to their heightened risk of complications. Reports of recurrent febrile syndromes and multiple infections within short periods indicate overlapping transmission cycles...

Health alert in Santiago de Cuba due to an outbreak of dengue and chikungunya
Health authorities report an active transmission of both viruses, with a daily average ranging between 1,200 and 1,234 patients with fever.
By CiberCuba Editorial Team
Wednesday, November 12, 2025 - 11:20

Santiago de Cuba is currently under health alert due to the sustained increase in fever cases associated with dengue and chikungunya, as confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Public Health cited by the official broadcaster CMKC Radio Revolución.

Health authorities -who acknowledged on Tuesday that there was an epidemic- report an active transmission of both viruses, with a daily average ranging between 1,200 and 1,234 patients with fever of unspecified origin, the report states.

The recent passage of a hurricane through the region worsened the situation by increasing the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector that transmits these diseases.

The Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) confirmed the increased circulation of the chikungunya virus, which was first detected in Africa in 1952 and has spread throughout the Americas since 2014...

Dengue, Zika, and chikungunya outbreaks in Cuba: Quebecers urged to be careful not to bring these viruses back during their holidays

The Caribbean island is experiencing its biggest health crisis since COVID

Mathieu-Robert Sauvé
Saturday, November 22, 2025 00:00
UPDATE Saturday, November 22, 2025 00:00

Quebec tourists who enjoy all-inclusive holidays in Cuba should beware of mosquito bites carrying tropical diseases, which have made a strong comeback in the Caribbean in recent months.

“I had such intense and painful body aches that I had difficulty going down the stairs,” says Julie Mallette of Gatineau. She contracted dengue fever during her stay in Cuba last September.

Even though she had coated herself with mosquito repellent, three insects managed to bite her leg in broad daylight.

"They are very small mosquitoes that you can't even feel, but a single bite is enough to transmit the virus," said the federal public service employee.

Symptoms began four days after she returned home and worsened rapidly. She went to the emergency room at Buckingham Hospital in late September, where blood tests confirmed she had dengue fever. She feels well now, but the joint problems and pain lasted about ten days.

Comeback

Cuba has dealt with a dengue epidemic in the past, but the country managed to stop the problem by spreading pesticides, explains infectious disease specialist Benoit Barbeau of the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM).

"This year we are witnessing a resurgence of this infectious disease and two others, Zika and chikungunya," he comments.

According to the Reuters news agency, a third of the Cuban population has been infected this fall by one or more of these diseases that are currently mobilizing the National Public Health.

“Dengue fever has long been a problem in Cuba, but the situation has worsened as the economic crisis hampers the government’s ability to disinfect soils, clean roadsides, and repair sewers,” read a dispatch dated November 13. The chikungunya virus, which is also transmitted by mosquitoes, has also made a notable comeback, as has Zika (see box).

In Canada, the alert level was raised on November 18, with travelers planning to go to Cuba being advised to "take enhanced health precautions." This includes using insect repellent, wearing long clothing, and sleeping under a mosquito net in rural areas.

I still like Varadero

The 34,000 subscribers of the Facebook group "I love Varadero" are not surprised by this epidemic and several point out that the situation remains safe provided that the necessary measures are taken.

André Delisle, who is part of this group, is very critical of the situation in Cuba. "The authorities have not taken sufficient measures to prevent this kind of disease. Friends I help told me that relatives have died of dengue fever in the Boca de Camarioca region. For me, Cuba is finished," he told the Journal .

For Ms. Malette , her infection does not mean the end of her love affair with the island. "I will go back, but I will be more careful," she says.

Diseases without treatment

There is no specific treatment for dengue, Zika, or chikungunya. Patients should use standard methods to manage viral illnesses: rest, hydration, pain medication, and medical monitoring to prevent complications.

Dengue

Widespread in the Caribbean (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Martinique, Guadeloupe), this viral disease is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito .

Symptoms appear three to seven days after the bite of an infected mosquito: sudden fever, intense headaches, muscle and joint pain, significant fatigue and sometimes a skin rash.

Chikungunya

The presence of the virus, transmitted by the species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus , is confirmed in Cuba, Martinique and Guadeloupe.

It causes fever and sometimes debilitating joint pain two to 12 days after infection.

Zika

Transmitted by the same mosquitoes as chikungunya, Zika causes generally mild symptoms three to 14 days after infection: fever, rash, headache, muscle and joint pain, and conjunctivitis.

The major risk concerns pregnant women, as the infection can cause congenital malformations (microcephaly).

Malaria and West Nile virus are also present.

Malaria causes a recurring high fever accompanied by chills, sweats, headaches, and intense fatigue. In severe cases, it can lead to severe anemia, neurological damage, or organ failure, requiring urgent hospitalization.

West Nile virus infection is often mild, with symptoms including fever, headache, muscle aches, and sometimes a rash. Severe cases can cause meningitis or encephalitis.

Cuban Health Crisis Worsens: Children Predominantly in Intensive Care Amid Epidemic Surge
Friday, November 28, 2025 by Felix Ortiz

The Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) has provided an updated report on the alarming arbovirus epidemic sweeping the nation, confirming that children remain the predominant group in intensive care units.

Dr. Susana Suárez Tamayo, head of Environmental Health at MINSAP, disclosed that all 14 provinces of the island continue to experience high rates of mosquito-borne illnesses, with an alarming 5,940 individuals presenting with unspecified febrile syndrome in the last 24 hours alone.

"Children continue to be the most affected demographic. There are currently 102 patients in intensive care, with 76 in serious condition and 24 critically ill," Dr. Suárez stated on the official TV program Buenos Días.

The most affected age group requiring intensive care comprises those under 18, according to further insights.

The health report also highlights the active spread of both dengue and chikungunya across the nation, with case numbers rising compared to previous days.

"Yesterday, 170 dengue tests were conducted, revealing more positive cases than the day before. Currently, 47 patients are hospitalized due to this illness," the official clarified.

Chikungunya has seen an increase of 916 new cases in just the past 24 hours, with confirmed circulation in all 15 provinces, while the oropouche virus has resulted in 4,122 infections so far this year, spread across 12 provinces.

"Oropouche remains stable with no new diagnoses since September, though we continue to monitor for potential reactivation," added Suárez...
