Cuba Strengthens Preventive Measures against Dengue Epidemic

Deputy Public Health Minister Luis Struch said Cuba is strengthening preventive measures to avoid the spreading of dengue and the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector of this disease.
Dengue is a big threat to the world and mainly to the Americas, which in 2009 reported the largest epidemic and where nearly two million cases -including 37 fatal victims- have been reported in 2010.
?Cuba does not escape this threat since thousands of Cuban nationals are currently working abroad and foreign youths from countries of the region are studying in the island,? the official noted.
?He added that systematic actions such as border control measures led to the detection of 87 imported cases in 2009 while 19 have been identified in 2010,? he pointed out.
?Another important aspect of this battle against the Aedes aegypti is the constant work of government, political and health authorities, and thousands of volunteers and workers from several sectors,? Struch added.
He said that 10 out of the country?s 14 provinces and 129
municipalities do not report the presence of the mosquito but he insisted on the importance of complying with all the measures to avoid the emergence of a dengue epidemic.
