Croatia: New swine fever outbreak

Croatian authorities have confirmed that a new outbreak of classical swine fever has hit the eastern part of the country. This outbreak comes just 3 months after thousands of pigs were slaughtered in the region to stop the epidemic.

In July 2006, the eastern part of Croatia was hit by the swine fever, turning into an epidemic that was brought under control by veterinary authorities. In the action, some 11,000 pigs were slaughtered, causing losses of ?1.1 million euros (US$1.4 million).
In October, an outbreak of CSF occured in the eastern town of Dalj, in Osijek-Baranja County, where some 3,600 pigs were to be slaughtered. In November, yet another outbreak occured, resulting in 5,500 pigs being culled.
