Country and city population maps/data

Nothing to do with birdflu but I have been looking for good data on the growth of urban centers and population redistribution with a view to factoring this in to pandemic calculations but have not found quite what I am looking for. This is close but it does not have a temporal component I hope others find it useful and if you know of something similar that shows change over time please post a link or PM me.
Thanks JJ

P.S. What it can do is list country, city & conurbation in any order or as mapped data. You can zoom around the globe (google maps style) and click on any city of 1,000,000+ and you get a data pane on that city. Did you know that Tehran is a bigger conurbation than London? That Tokyo at 33,000,000 is so far the biggest it could regurgitate the population of Paris and still hold the number one spot by population.
