Swine Fever Virus Declared in Bateguedia (Daloa): The Government Takes Measures to Limit the Spread of the Disease

These include, in particular, the ban on the movement of pigs, pork products and by-products in the Daloa department.

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, April 10, 2024/APO Group/ -- Following a suspicious death of pigs on a farm in Batéguédia (Daloa), due to the presence of African swine fever (ASF) virus, the government took measures with the aim of containing this epizootic.

These include, in particular, the ban on the movement of pigs, pork products and by-products in the Daloa department, the sanitary culling of pigs within the perimeter of the outbreaks, the cleaning and disinfection of affected farms and reinforced health surveillance in risk areas.

As ASF is a notifiable disease, the government invites people to report any suspicious morality of pigs. And to reassure that this disease is harmless to humans and that the consumption of pork and pork products can be done without risk.

It should be remembered that this disease appeared for the first time in 1996 when it caused the death of 100,000 pigs and caused the Ivorian State to spend more than 1.8 billion FCFA. In addition, between 2015 and 2023, the Coast experienced five epizootics which cost the pork industry 9.2 billion FCFA in terms of direct economic losses.

Ivory Coast. Swine fever: thousands of pigs slaughtered and 60 farms destroyed in Bouaflé

Published on : Monday June 3, 2024 By: Moussa Koné I. | Source: Lebanco.net

More than sixty farms have been destroyed and several thousand pigs have been slaughtered in Bouaflé since the discovery of African Swine Fever (ASF) on May 8, 2024, in this locality in the center-west of Côte d'Ivoire. We went to the locality to see the effectiveness of this operation which is part of the fight against this deadly disease which affects pigs and wild boars. In fact, the infected animals are located in Zagréfla, a village in Bouaflé. Following the instructions of the ministry, a prefectural decree was signed to circumscribe the infection zone over a radius of three kilometers and to enforce the prescribed health police measures. These measures were reminded to us by Lieutenant-Colonel Silué Lacina, regional director of the Ministry of Animal and Fisheries Resources (Mirah) for the Marahoué Region whom we met. They consist of “slaughtering all the pigs, destroying the corpses and feces, disinfecting the place, prohibiting access to the place and stopping all activity relating to pig breeding,” he said. And added: “Currently, all pork sales points are closed until further notice. If you see one, call us,” he urged.

We go to the market to observe. On no table do we see either a leg or a pig's head which we easily recognize because of the whiteness of the offal. We hoped to at least see the traders or the places of sale. Unfortunately, we won't know more, because of the reluctance of people in the market who suspect us of being an inspector or controller from the ministry.

Later, through an anonymous person, we were able to contact a breeder named BD to collect a testimony. “We were a little reluctant. But now we understand. It is we ourselves who are now calling the ministry agents to come and do the slaughter. And all those who were hiding to bring out or kill their pigs and sell, they all stopped. It's a financial loss for us. But we have had assurances from the minister that we will be compensated. So there are no problems,” he says.

According to information from the supervisory authority, ASF is harmless to humans, but its presence on a farm can kill the entire pig herd. When it is discovered in an area, it is necessary to wait six months for it to disappear after compliance with the prescribed measures and the negative analysis carried out by the National Agricultural Development Support Laboratory (LANADA). Moreover, it is this laboratory which, after analysis on a few dead pigs in Bouaflé and Songon, in the Abidjan suburbs, determined the presence of ASF on May 10, 2024. Remember that this disease appeared in Côte d'Abidjan. Ivory, for the first time, in 1995. Then from 2015 to 2023, it appears episodically in the pork sector and hinders its development.
