Côte d'Ivoire: A new Crimean-Congo hemorrhage fever disease emerges in West Africa
A new disease, called Crimean hemorrhage fever -Congo- appeared after Covid 19, Ebola, in Arque de l'Ouest. Seven cases of death reported in Mali and two cases of death recorded in Senegal. Côte d'Ivoire has not recorded any cases but remains on high alert.
This information was given on May 17, 2023 in Korhogo at the prefecture conference room by Mrs. Fadiga Haida Kaly née Diarrassouba Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Animal and Fisheries Resources
This is Crimean-Congo hemorrhage fever (CCHF), which is a common disease caused by a virus (nairovirus) of the Bunyaviridae family, transmitted by ticks found in wild and domestic animals including oxen, sheep, goats... The virus causes outbreaks of severe viral hemorrhagic fever flow of blood, in the patient's nose, mouth, with a fatality rate of 10 to 40%. To date, Mrs. Fadiga clarified “there is no vaccine for either humans or animals”.
It was during the presentations relating to the simulation exercises for the Crimean-Congo disease, which brought together all the stakeholders in northern Côte d'Ivoire, the populations, veterinarians, breeders, butchers, livestock traders, farmers of animal-drawn oxen... in the presence of the Secretary General of the prefecture Tohoury paulin-martial Okou representing the prefect of the poro region, prefect of the department of korhogo. Partners such as FAO, USAID, Pasteur Institute of Côte d'Ivoire, LANADA. National Institute of Public Hygiene, Breaktrough Action..
However, the Technical Advisor of the Ministry of Animal and Fishery Resources clarified that transmission to humans is through tick bites either by contact with blood or tissues of infected animals, during or immediately after slaughter. . In human-to-human transmission can occur following contact with blood, clippings, organs or biological fluids of infected subjects
Nosocomial infections can also occur due to poor sterilization of medical equipment, re-use of needles and contamination of supplies… This disease is endemic in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and Asia. Each year, cases are recorded in West Africa, particularly in Senegal, Mali and Mauritania. Only in the months of April and May 2023, two people died after contracting Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Senegal.
In view of the above, the threat is at our doorstep. We cannot always predict an emergency situation but we can prepare ourselves...preparation is essential to deal with it... revealed Ms. the technical adviser to the Ministry of fish and animal resources.
Indeed, the Korhogo stimulation exercise aims to better organize all the stakeholders and to strengthen the capacities and capability of the country, particularly the Poro region, to manage an animal health emergency. To this end, a certain number of parts of professionals need to be prepared in order to coordinate, cooperate and collaborate at all levels, when emergency situations occur, regardless of their severity.
Exchanges with stakeholders and experts put an end to this meeting on the new Crimean-Congo disease. A virus discovered during the years 1945 in Crimea located between Russia and Ukraine and discovered in Congo in Central Africa in 1959 or the name Crimea-Congo given to this deadly virus.
