Cases of acute gastroenteritis identified in Corte

Press release
November 9, 2023

Situation update
Since last week, cases of acute gastroenteritis have been diagnosed in Corte with an increase in visits to the unscheduled medical reception of the Corte Tattone Hospital Center and to community pharmacies in recent days.

Patients treated generally see symptoms disappear within 24 hours, without the need for hospitalization.

Faced with this observation, the ARS and Public Health France are carrying out investigations to determine the nature and potential sources of this epidemic episode. No conclusions can be drawn at this time.

As part of these investigations, the chlorination rates of the various water supply sources, from storms, from boreholes (Taviganu) then from the river water intake (Restonica) were constantly checked. These rates have always complied with regulations.

Furthermore, water samples for the purposes of bacteriological analyzes were carried out by the laboratory of the Office of Hydraulic Equipment of Corsica, at the request of the municipality of Corte and the Regional Health Agency, in several points in the distribution network, Tuesday November 7 and Wednesday November 8.

The first result from the analysis commissioned by the municipality of Corte shows that the water distributed complied with regulations and was free from any bacteriological contamination.

Other results will be known at the end of the week and will complete the ongoing epidemiological monitoring.

In the meantime, and as part of the precautionary principle, temporary prevention measures are recommended:

To all people who are sick or in contact with sick people: apply the strictest hygiene measures (hand washing with soap or use of hydro-alcoholic gel).

For vulnerable people, particularly immunocompromised people and infants: consume bottled water, prepare baby bottles with bottled water, boil tap water for 5 minutes before consuming it or using it to preparing food and brushing teeth. Tap water can always be used for cooking food, showering, household uses (dishes, laundry, etc.).

Daily monitoring of the situation with the Town Hall, the Hospital Center and liberal healthcare professionals is in place.

In Corte, faced with the gastroenteritis epidemic, water analyzes carried out

As part of the gastro epidemic which has hit the city for several days, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) has carried out water analyzes. Health professionals recommend the return of barrier gestures.

In the Paolin city, the resurgence of cases associated with problems with the city's water supply, spread the rumor according to which the first fact was the consequence of the second.

The first cases appeared before last week's storms, with classic symptoms of gastroenteritis: "There is nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and fever , lists Pascal Spazzola, doctor of pharmacy. Some patients have them all, others only a few."

At the start of last weekend, things were still relatively calm and it was on Monday that the epidemic really exploded.

The emergency rooms at Corte hospital and the pharmacies were always full. The EHPAD U Serenu was not spared either: “At Serenu 1 alone we had forty residents infected, and a good part of the staff , lists Laurent Curinga, the director of the structure. This had an impact important on care and we went through complicated times. That said, we did not have any serious cases. As a precaution, we still bought bottles of mineral water."

Transmission “through contact and saliva”

Because the epidemic, in addition to spreading a virus, has spread rumors. In particular that of contamination of the water of Tavignanu which flowed from the taps, since the cessation of the supply by Restonica . From conversations on social networks, suspicion became affirmation, despite denials from municipal authorities.

Faced with this, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and Public Health France have “carried out investigations to determine the nature and potential sources of this epidemic episode” of gastroenteritis described as “acute” .

And if on Wednesday November 8, it was specified that at this stage "no conclusion [could] be established" , one thing was nevertheless proven: "The chlorination rates of the various water supply sources, since the storms, coming from boreholes (Tavignanu) then the river water intake (Restonica) were constantly checked. These rates have always complied with regulations."

At the request of the ARS and the town hall, samples were also taken by the laboratory of the Office of Hydraulic Equipment, "at several points on the network, Tuesday November 7 and Wednesday November 8" . Result: “The water distributed complied with regulations and was free from any bacteriological contamination.”

For Pascal Spazzola, this epidemic is above all the return of the virus after the covid years: "Gastroenteritis is transmitted by contact and saliva. We must therefore avoid shaking hands or drinking from the glass of someone. That said, in the context of ''traditional'' gastro, the virus is virulent but not resistant, and washing your hands regularly with soap is a good way to protect yourself. Ultimately, it we must resume barrier gestures."

Proof of the extent of the epidemic, the pharmacist sold, in the month of November, three times more anti-nausea medications than usual.

Concerning the analyzes carried out on the water, the ARS warns that "other results will be known at the end of the week and will complete the ongoing epidemiological monitoring" .
