Redoubled surveillance of leptospirosis
Published 19/02/2011

According to the National Institute of Health, during 2010 in Colombia were presented 2,442 cases of leptospirosis of which 63 ended with the death of patients, so said Secretary of Health Department, Javier Dario Marulanda, who said the idea is to increase surveillance. The official stressed the obligation of local authorities and health to strengthen the control of the disease, "especially considering that Risaralda department is the third most reported cases in the country after Valle and Antioquia."

"Last year we reported 163 probable cases, but the only confirmed the National Institutes of Health was the death of a person," said department epidemiologist, Alberto Medina C?rdova. This disease, caused by the bacteria leptospira, was taken over by people whose skin comes into contact with feces or urine of carrier animals, like rats, dogs, cows and pigs.
