Avian flu reported in Brazil, Colombia backyard birds

According to a December 26 report from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the presence of HPAI was confirmed in two backyard flocks in Colombia.

In El Reten, a Flock of 70 backyard birds had showed signs of respiratory and neurological distress. Half of the birds in the flock had died.

Another case was reported in Majagual. In that situation, seven of 41 birds in a backyard holding had died.

In both situations, the birds were depopulated. Other control measures applied included quarantine, movement control, surveillance within and outside of the restricted area and disinfection of the premises.

Colombia has now had six backyard flocks hit by HPAI within the past two months. The cases previously reported to WOAH include three in Guaranda and another in Majagual.

Bogotá, March 10, 2026.

The Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) confirmed an outbreak of avian influenza in the department of Meta. The affected population consists of backyard poultry located on a property in the municipality of Puerto Concordia. The Institute immediately implemented the protocols established within the National Epidemiological Surveillance System and the measures outlined in the National Contingency Plan for avian influenza.

These actions are aimed at containing, eradicating, and mitigating the risk of the virus spreading in the region. This outbreak is the first identified by the ICA this year.

To ensure a timely response to the outbreak, the ICA deployed a specialized technical team to the region, comprised of professionals in veterinary epidemiology, avian health, and agricultural extension. This team is currently leading the epidemiological investigation, sample collection, monitoring of at-risk properties, and providing technical support to poultry producers in the department.

These activities are being carried out in coordination with local authorities, poultry industry associations, and other stakeholders in the health system, with the aim of mitigating the spread of the agent, protecting the country's animal health status, and safeguarding national poultry production.

In accordance with the international standards of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), the detection of this event in backyard poultry does not compromise Colombia's animal health status. Therefore, the country maintains its self-declaration as a territory free of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

It is important to note that this outbreak does not pose a risk to national production, and therefore the consumption of eggs and chicken meat in the country is not compromised.
