Fighting cocks seized at Indiana house

GARY, Ind., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Sheriff's deputies in Indiana seized 77 roosters from a property in a rural area near Gary that was apparently used for cockfighting. <table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" width="255"> <tbody><tr><td>

They also found metal spurs and cockfighting magazines at the house, owned by Randall Martin, the Northwest Indiana Post-Tribune reported. The birds were penned in the backyard and dogs were chained between the cages, apparently to keep predators away.
The property also contained what appeared to be a cockfighting ring.
"The sum total of the evidence says this is not just livestock," said Scott Wilson, the Indiana program director for the Humane Society of the United States.
Deputies found booby traps in the house and a number of dead animals in a freezer in the basement, including a great horned owl -- a federally protected species -- raccoons, minks and a fox.
Martin's wife, Elizabeth, was questioned by police but not arrested. Lake County authorities are expected to file charges next week.
