Possible Whooping Cough Outbreak in Clarke County
Updated: Oct 21, 2008 11:25 AM
October 21, 2008--Iowa health officials say they may have an outbreak of whooping cough in Clarke County. More than a dozen people have tested positive for the airborne illness. Most of them are school-aged children.
Monica Garner is the director of The Village, which is an early childhood center. Last week, one of her students became infected. Since then, she's done her best trying to calm worried parents. "They're asking a lot of do we need to get the medication if one's on it...we've tried to communicate as much as possible to call the public health," says Garner.
Symptoms of whooping cough start out a lot like the common cold, but can cause difficulty breathing and last up to 100 days. So far this year, the Iowa Department of Public Health says it has seen 62 confirmed cases.
