Michigan reports H1N2v flu in fairgoer
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) yesterday reported a variant H1N2 (H1N2v) infection in a person who had contact with pigs at the Berrien County Youth Fair.
Officials said the case was confirmed on Sep 9 by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The fair was held Aug 15 through 20. The MDHHS said county health officials are working with fair officials on the follow-up investigation.
The MDHHS said fair season in Michigan extends into October, and it warned state residents to avoid pigs and swine barns if they are at risk for flu complications. Officials also urged people to take other precautions, such as avoiding eating and drinking in swine barns and avoiding pigs if they have flulike symptoms.
So far, six fair-linked variant flu cases have been reported from four states. Earlier cases were reported in August from West Virginia, Oregon, and Ohio. Three involved H3N2v, and two were linked to H1N2v.
In late August, the CDC issued a health advisory that urged health providers to watch for variant flu infections and warned that more cases are expected during the agricultural fair season.

Avian flu strikes more poultry in 3 states
In its latest updates, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported five more highly pathogenic avian flu outbreaks in poultry in California, Idaho, and Minnesota, including three at commercial farms.
Two of the outbreaks occurred in California, one at a commercial broiler farm housing 23,900 birds in Fresno County and the other at a backyard location that has 150 birds in El Dorado County.
Also in the West, the virus struck backyard birds in Idaho's Twin Falls County, affecting 30 poultry.
Elsewhere, outbreaks hit two commercial turkey farms in Minnesota, one a breeding hen facility housing 17,100 birds in Becker County and the other a turkey farm that has 34,200 birds in Meeker County.
So far, the outbreaks involving the Eurasian H5N1 strain have led to the loss of 43.9 million poultry across 39 states.
