Flu activity up in Southern Hemisphere; Flu vaccine shipments starting

[h=3]Flu activity up in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa[/h] Influenza activity is starting to pick up in some Southern Hemisphere nations, the World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday in an update.
Flu activity continued to increase in Australia and New Zealand, surpassing the seasonal threshold in Australia. It remained elevated in South Africa, with 2009 H1N1 and influenza B co-circulating. Activity also remained elevated in tropical Asia, with 2009 H1N1 and H3N2 equally common there in recent weeks.
Other regions around the globe reported low flu activity, the WHO said.
The agency tested 26,786 respiratory specimens in the latter part of June, with 1,476 (5.5% ) positive for flu. Among those, 73% were influenza A and the rest flu B. The type A viruses comprised about 60% H3N2 and 40% 2009 H1N1.

[h=3]Sanofi Pasteur to start shipping seasonal flu vaccine[/h] Sanofi Pasteur announced today that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the first lots of the company's Fluzone seasonal influenza vaccine for shipment, signaling the approach of the Northern Hemisphere's flu vaccination season, which typically peaks in the fall.
In a press release, the company said it expects to ship more than 65 million doses of flu vaccine to healthcare providers and pharmacies for the 2015-16 flu season.
Sanofi noted that it is supplying its Fluzone Intradermal Quadrivalent (four-strain) vaccine this season for the first time. The product, approved in 2014 for adults aged 18 through 64, uses a 1.5-millimeter microneedle to inject vaccine into the skin.
The company is also distributing its high-dose vaccine for seniors and a quadrivalent intramuscular vaccine, along with its trivalent Fluzone product.
