H5N1 case in Egyptian girl; H5N1 outbreaks in Nigeria

[h=3]Egyptian officials confirm H5N1 in Egyptian girl[/h] A 3-year-old girl in Faiyum governorate has contracted H5N1 avian flu, health officials confirmed in media reports translated by FluTrackers, an infectious disease message board.
The case interrupts a 2-month lull in the country, which has been hit with a spate of cases this year and has now confirmed 144 H5N1 cases since Jan 1, according to a list maintained by FluTrackers.
The girl was hospitalized after she spiked a fever, but her condition has stabilized after treatment, the reports said. They provided no mention of exposure risk.

[h=3]Nigeria reports 30 H5N1 outbreaks involving 65,000 poultry[/h] Nigeria, which has battled a raft of H5N1 avian flu outbreaks in birds since the start of the year, yesterday reported 30 outbreaks that it experienced back in March affecting 64,796 poultry, according to a report filed with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
All the outbreaks were in Plateau state in the middle of the country. Flocks range in size from 620 to 6,858 poultry. All told, 1,609 birds contracted the disease and died, and the remainder of the flocks were culled to prevent disease spread.
Control measures were put in place. Since the beginning of the year, Nigeria has now confirmed 115 H5N1 outbreaks in domestic birds.
