[h=3]Netherlands reports first H7N9 poultry outbreak since 2015[/h] The Netherlands lost nearly 45,000 poultry to low-pathogenic H7N9 avian influenza, the first outbreak of the strain in more than a year, according to a Jun 10 report from the country to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
The farm involved is in Haiure, a small village in the northwestern province of Friesland. Neither the type of birds affected nor the number of cases is specified in the report, which simply states that 44,630 were susceptible and have been destroyed.
The cause of the outbreak is given as "unknown or inconclusive." A 1-kilometer restriction zone around the farm has been established, and there are no other farms within this perimeter, says the report. The outbreak is continuing, and weekly updates will be made available.
Previous to this new outbreak, the most recent occurrence of H7N9 in Dutch birds was in April 2015, according to the OIE.

[h=3]Study shows starlings can get asymptomatic H7N9 infections[/h] In H7N9 research news, the findings of a study published online Jun 10 in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases suggest that starlings could be a source of the virus in live-poultry markets and may play a role in transmission to both poultry and humans.
The researchers, from the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wis., inoculated wild European Starlings, which are common peridomestic birds in the Northern Hemisphere, with the H7N9 strain of avian flu. The 22 birds were divided into three treatment groups receiving different doses of the virus and one control group. No birds showed any outward signs of infection.
The birds receiving lower doses showed no excretion of H7N9, nor did the controls, but two of the six birds in the high-dose group did excrete the virus for up to 7 days. Another bird in the high-dose group orally excreted the virus 3 days later than its infected cagemate, so it may have become infected from that bird rather than from the inoculation, the authors wrote. Still another bird in the group excreted the virus on just one sampling, so its H7N9 status could not be stated confidently.
The authors say that the birds can excrete the H7N9 virus "in quantities sufficient to infect other European Starlings, poultry, and potentially humans." Continued research on the role played by these peridomestic species and others at live-bird markets is warranted, they conclude.
H7N9 avian flu has caused nearly 600 cases of infection with more than 200 deaths since its 2013 discovery in humans.
