A 17-year-old A/H1N1 flu patient in south China's Guangdong Province has been diagnosed as being in "critical condition" as he has been in coma for a week, the first such case on the Chinese mainland.

The patient, a high school student in the provincial capital of Guangzhou, developed a fever on Aug. 5, and passed out the next day at home. He was sent to the Guangzhou Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, a spokesman with the Guangdong Provincial Health Department said Wednesday. "He was in a deep coma when he was hospitalized. His heartbeat stopped and his blood pressure couldn't be measured," the spokesman said. He was transferred to the Guangzhou Municipal Institute of Respiratory Disease on Aug. 8. A diagnosis carried out on Monday showed that the patient was an A/H1N1 flu case in "critical condition," the spokesman said.

The patient also developed symptoms of arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation, pneumonia and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a condition in which the brain does not receive enough oxygen.

"Currently, he is still in coma and in critical condition," the spokesman said.

Local health authorities have set up a taskforce to treat the patient, he said.

The Chinese mainland had confirmed nearly 2,350 cases of A/H1N1 flu as of 3 p.m. Monday, the Ministry of Health said. Of confirmed A/H1N1 cases, 2,167 have recovered and have been discharged. Previously, there had been no fatal or critical cases resulting from A/H1N1 reported on the Chinese mainland, but one infected patient in Hangzhou from eastern Zhejiang Province reportedly died of electrocution in a ward lavatory on July 1. The death was thought to have been caused by a faulty electrical circuit.

The critical condition of an A/H1N1 flu patient in southern China, the first very serious case on the mainland, was caused by a rare genetic disease rather than the flu virus itself, a local doctor said Thursday.

"After research and consultation, we found evidence that the patient, a 17-year-old boy, suffers a rare genetic disease named Brugada Syndrome. We believe it is this disease that has led to the patient's critical condition," said Xiao Zhenglun, deputy head of the expert team on the treatment of A/H1N1 flu cases in southern province of Guangdong.

The Brugada syndrome, not known to the patient and his parents beforehand, was discovered through abnormal electrocardiogram findings. The disease may cause cardiac arrest. The doctor said the disease might have been triggered when the patient had a fever, resulting in arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac arrest, which were exactly the patient's symptoms when he was sent to the hospital.

The boy, a high school student in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, developed a fever on Aug. 5, and passed out the next day at home before being hospitalized. According to Xiao, also professor from the Guangzhou Municipal Institute of Respiratory Disease, the boy's blood pressure and heartbeat has returned to normal and most of his organs are functioning well, but he is still in a coma and suffering severe brain edema.

The patient's parents and two brothers were under quarantine on Aug. 2. All four people's temperature are normal. Lin Jinyan, a senior official with the Guangdong Center of Disease Control and Prevention, said as of now no major virus mutation had been detected and the "critical case" didn't mean that the virus had become stronger.

GUANGZHOU: A middle school student's history of asthma might be one reason behind his critical condition after being infected by H1N1 flu, a local disease control expert said yesterday.
The 17-year-old flu patient in Guangzhou has been in a coma for more than a week after he developed a fever, with his temperature reaching 39.4 C last Wednesday, according to the provincial health department.
The patient, surnamed Qiu, is the first patient on the mainland to be in critical condition as a result of the flu, it said.
"The patient had a history of asthma in his childhood, which might partly lead to his serious condition," He Jianfeng, an expert at the Guangdong provincial disease control and prevention center, told China Daily yesterday.

Qiu's critical status does not mean that the virus has become more dangerous, He said.
"But people should be vaccinated against the seasonal variety of the flu, given the double risk of H1N1 and the seasonal influenza," he said.
The student's heart had stopped and his blood pressure could not be measured when he was hospitalized in the Guangzhou Traditional Medicine Hospital a day after he caught a fever, according to the release.
He was transferred to the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease last Saturday.
The patient also developed symptoms of arrhythmia (irregular heart beat), ventricular fibrillation (heart muscle dysfunction), pneumonia and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (a condition in which the brain does not receive enough oxygen), according to a diagnosis by an expert group on Monday.
His heartbeat and blood pressure have improved thanks to efforts by a special treatment taskforce jointly set up by the Ministry of Health and the provincial health authorities.
However, he was still in a coma and listed in critical condition yesterday, sources with the Guangzhou health bureau said.
Qiu's second elder brother was first infected with the flu, but the infection source was not identified, a spokesman with the bureau said yesterday.
"Qiu might have been infected by his brother," the spokesman said.

A swine flu patient in a critical condition in southern China has a rare genetic disease, a doctor said yesterday.

The Chinese mainland had confirmed more than 2,420 cases of H1N1 flu as of 3pm on Wednesday, the Ministry of Health said.
