Taipei, April 18 (CNA) China has informed the Department of Health (DOH) that it is in the process of sending a wild strain of the H7N9 bird flu virus to Taiwan, a senior Taiwanese health official said Thursday.
"We have received information from Chinese health authorities that they began the virus delivery procedures this afternoon," said Chou Jih-haw, deputy director-general of the DOH's Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Chou said the shipment was not expected to arrive the same night because it requires strict procedural control and document certification.
"We will make an announcement when the shipment arrives," he added.
"The wild strain will be used to check whether test reagents now in use in Taiwan are effective and whether Tamiflu is effective against the H7N9 bird flu," Chou said.
The CDC will reproduce the virus and study its biological features, he said.
As to whether the wild strain from China will be cultured for production of an H7N9 vaccine, Chou said that will be considered later.
